About Me
My name is Mark and I recently earned my USPTA teaching professional certification in April 2018. I’m just getting my feet wet teaching but loving every minute of it! I led group lessons with beginner adults through the USTA’s Tennis In Your Park program. What I lack in years of teaching experience I make up for with 40 years of playing competitively in junior tournaments, high school, college and League tennis. I have worked as a foster care provider for adults with developmental disabilities for the last 20 years. I bring a sincere passion for helping others to each lesson I give.
Teaching Style
There is a wonderful book called The Inner Game Of Tennis by Tim Gallwey written way back in 1972 that has withstood the test of time and was a huge inspiration for me to become a tennis instructor. It emphasizes the mental side of the game and how people learn most effectively. Gallwey has a formula: performance = potential - interference. Interference is everything like judgment, criticism, doubt, fear that get in the way of performing to one’s potential. His famously simple drill of bounce - hit is something I use in all my lessons.

I am an adult beginner tennis player and have been working with Mark for about two months. We have worked on the basics strokes, typically one stroke per lesson so far. He is very receptive to what my goals are for this first year and tailors the lesson accordingly. His advice on technique is very good and I have already noticed big improvements. Mark has been very flexible to work out lesson times and places. He is very enthusiastic about teaching tennis and the game in general. I would definitely recommend Mark as an instructor.
Working with Mark has been an incredible experience. Our 13-year-old started with him after joining school tennis and having no experience or even his own racquet. After a couple of lessons, he's got position, grip, swing, strategy, and most of all serving down. The serve is the most improved aspect, like night and day compared to when he started.
Mark is a very organized and calm instructor while pushing students to progress by setting in-practice goals and offering clear and immediate feedback.
Mark is trustworthy and most importantly, communicates quickly and clearly. He was willing to accommodate us at every turn making organizing lessons very easy.
Whether you're looking to improve your game or that of your kids (my kid can now compete, making playing together much more fun for both of us), I highly recommend Mark Encell as an instructor!
