About Me
Hi, my name is Lucious, (AKA Lou). I am a passionate certified USTA/PTR teaching professional. I have been playing tennis for 24 years and teaching the game for 25 years. I was a member of a USTA team that made Nationals standing in the year 2004-2005. I am certified to teach youths (10 and Under), high performance teens, young/middle/senior adults. I am a college grad with a BA and university graduate with a MA in communications. I worked as an educator for the NYC Department of Education for 38 years. I attend annual professional development classes in order to keep myself updated with the latest changes and or additions to the game of tennis in today's world. I am dependable, reliable, punctual, and a strong believer in the concepts of purpose and structure. I have been teaching for the last 19 years at the Highland Park Tennis Association located in Brooklyn, NY and in addition, for the Harlem YMCA for the last 15 years.
Teaching Style
I use the three principles of learning in my teaching with emphasis on "Observation, what do I see? , Interpretation, what do I understand about what "I see" and Application , how do I replicate and or apply what I saw and understood. Safety is at the top of my list with fun coming in as a close second. My teaching style is focused on progressions that allow participants have repeated interactions that vacillates between a cerebral and concrete construct. I begin my lessons by teaching informational content,(Cerebral),first; i.e. language and terms relevant to tennis which includes the 4 C's of sports, "Control, Consistency, Competence, and Confidence". Then, via demonstration, I introduce and bridge the concrete information (the physicality of tennis, technique movement stroke production, etc.). Ounce the participants are able to the necessary level of competence and confidence, I move back to the cerebral side of the game to emphasize strategies, and planning techniques.

Coach Reid is great. He is very serious when teaching yet he has a way of making you feel relaxed. He has a great sense of humor and uses it constantly throughout the lesson. I now look at tennis in a whole new light. There is so much more to this sport than just hitting the ball over the net. I'm learning so much and having fun doing it. I look forward each week to meeting with Lucious.
