About Me
I am coach Leonard Johnson. I am a professional tennis coach. I have been involved in tennis as a player and coach since 1974. I was certified by the USPTA, (United States Professional Tennis Association) in 1998. I have coach beginner to advance players, ranging in age from 5yrs to 60+. I have worked for various parks and rec. centers throughout Southern California. I have coached for a number of private tennis businesses here in my home state. I was a USTA, (United States Tennis Association) certified tennis tournament official for 10yrs. and officiated tournaments in and out of California. I have been the facilitator for several USTA tennis programs in Southern California. In 2019 I asked to be the tennis coach for a private high school here in Lancaster, CA where I have lived for the last 20yrs or so. In 2021 I was honored with a nomination and induction into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame. I am very passionate about what I do and what I try to give to my students!
Teaching Style
It's all about the basics. Each stroke is broken down so the student understands how to properly produce them. This is most effective for beginners. For more advanced students, fine tuning helps to raise the game to the next level. For all students the importance of movement and balance are primary and are emphasized as needed. My lessons are goal oriented to meet the needs of the student.

We are so thankful that we found Coach Leonard on MyTennisLessons! He has been the perfect fit for my husband and I. We literally started with ZERO knowledge of the sport. We'd never watched a tennis match, nor had we ever stepped foot on a tennis court. Coach Leonard walked us through the basics and heavily focused on technique and form. I love that he is so patient and really encourages us to focus on our form first - so that A) We don't develop bad habits and B) we don't hurt ourselves! I would recommend Coach Leonard to anyone wanting to either learn from the start or to enhance your already seasoned tennis skills. He knows what he's talking about, is very patient, and will push you to challenge yourself.
What Roger Federer is to tennis, i.e. the complete package, Coach Leonard is tennis coaching’s complete package. Great instructor.
Great tennis lesson (AUG 6, 2022). Great tips on how to improve ground stroke performance. I really enjoyed today’s lesson. Coach Leonard does a wonderful job imparting his vast knowledge of the sport.
