About Me

Hi, my name is Jonathan. I played tennis in college, at Kirkland Hall tennis where I was no. 1 on the team, USTA tournaments (singles, doubles, mixed), men's 4.0 team tennis, and one ATP singles tournament. I taught as an assistant professional, head professional, and have served as a USTA tennis league coordinator for adult and junior team tennis. I have also coached 10 USTA team tennis teams, seven of which were undefeated league champions. I have coached two seasons of high school, both of which were undefeated league champions. I am currently the head tennis professional at Morningstar Tennis Academy in Bryn Mawr, PA. My last tennis team coaching assignment was at Haverford School where in 2013 we finished the season with seven wins no losses, and no. 1 in the league. I also assisted the varsity high school team who currently have 49 wins. I also direct and act as the head tennis professional at Valley Forge Community Tennis Association, a USTA CTA. In 2012 I was nominated as Tennis Professional of the Year. I have been mentored by several world class tennis teachers and players such as Alex Mayer and Pauline Betz. As of this year I have developed 12 local tennis players to receive rankings in the PATA and MSUSTA I play currently at 4.5 singles and 5.0 doubles level. I am also trained and certified to teach and coach soccer, boxing and swimming. I have a masters in education at Ashford University as well as a certification for speed and strength as a certified trainer CSCS.I am an honors under graduate in Psychology with significant study in sports psychology .I am currently doing a second Ma Ed in Sports Coaching at Patton Graduate College ,Ohio University online.

Teaching Style

I teach a modern ITF tennis style greatly influenced by teachers I played with and taught by who include former world no. 1 the late Pauline Betz, world class coach Alex Mayer, world renowned coach Dennis Van DeMeer and world class player and coach Oscar Wegner. I teach a modern forehand power game, based around combinations of shots and serve and return of serve. I stress, fun, fitness, discipline and skill. It's my opinion to learn shots in combinations such as forehands and approach shot or approach shot volley or overhead volley or serve, approach, volley.

Jonathan is one of the most talented tennis teachers around. I am a +4.0 player and he has given me tremendous value which has greatly enhanced my game. He is more than just a tennis guro, he's really a life long educator who understands the journey of learning and helps me along my own unique path. Jonathan. also teaches my kids, and both have flourished under his guidance... I highly recommend Jonathan and truly think he's one of the best. We are fortunate to have him in the area!

Just a quick note to thank you for improving the mechanics of my serve. And also the strength and conditioning work you’ve helped me with. My game has really improved. I’m in better shape and have been winning matches against players I couldn’t beat before, including against players half my age. You make me “think positive” and that has raised my game mentally, too. Cheers, Eric Z

My daughter Rachel has been taking lessons from Jon Newman for a little under 2 years now. I am really excited about the progress Rachel has made so far. Jon is a great tennis coach and he also plays excellent tennis himself. Teaching kids at Rachel’s age can be challenging, Jon is actually very good at that because of his patience and more important his long tennis coaching experience. At times when Rachel feels frustrated with a new technique, Jon would offer different ways for Rachel to try until she gets it. There are also times Jon would spend overtime with Rachel to make sure Rachel can do the technique from that day's lesson and feel accomplished. I think beside tennis skills, Rachel will also benefit from the good sports spirit Jon taught her throughout the lesson. Jon is very passionate about tennis and coaching; that becomes very obvious if you watch him teaching. He keeps his lesson fun and interesting. Rachel loves Jon’s lesson. As matter of the fact, I recently started to take lessons from Jon myself. Right after my first lesson, I start to appreciate more how complicated it can be for Rachel to do some of what she does. At the same time, Jon really made those clear and easy for students like me to learn them quickly. Also unlike other coaches, Jon don't just feed you balls, he actually plays real tennis with you and gives you real feedback on every of your stroke. I really enjoyed every minute of my lesson. Thank you Jon!

Jon Newman is one of the most gifted coaches I have met in my more than 35 years of involvement with the game of tennis. He has worked with some of the game's top teachers, and his methods reflect a knowledge of of both contemporary techniques and tactics and those of the game's classic expositors. Jon has a deep understanding of how the game has evolved over the past 30 years, and he brings a wealth of experience as a coach and a player onto the court in every lesson he teaches. Not only can Jon offer expert advice on strokes and tactics to advanced players, but he is equally gifted in developing the playing abilities of beginners and intermediates. He is exceptionally skilled at diagnosing faults and offering effective corrections-- much more so than the average teaching professional, and he is constantly working to improve his teaching methods. Jon is totally dedicated to the success of his students, and he is willing to devote long hours to ensuring that they make the very best of their talents. He is a person of the highest integrity and a credit to the game of tennis.

I am a college student who was just looking to casually hit and improve my game. Coach Jon has gone above and beyond that. He has given me confidence in my new grips and strokes. He gears the lessons to what I want to work on and where he thinks I need improvement. I absolutely recommend him.

Jonathan is an elite coach and teacher that is well suited for the beginner and advanced player. I am a 4+ player and my kids are beginners and he excels at teaching and coaching at both those levels. You would be hard pressed to find someone that has his level of passion, knowledge and skill. By far one of the best coaches you could find! Without hesitation I would recommend!
