About Me
I’ve been playing tennis for the past 30 years and I’ve found that it is a great way to get exercise, learn and develop new skills, keep your body and mind sharp, meet new friends and become part of a bigger tennis community.
I first discovered the sport of tennis my freshman year of high school. It was love at first strike. I couldn’t get enough of the sport. So I practiced every day and went on to play number two singles for our championship team at Drake High School. From there I went on to play singles and doubles at College Marin and helped lead our team to the win the division championships. after playing in a few USTA tournaments, I took a break from playing competitively to be a full-time middle school and elementary teacher then I went on to become a school counselor.
Then five years ago I picked up the sport again as the JV Tennis Coach for Northgate High School in Walnut Creek. After two great years, I took an opportunity to become the head varsity coach for both the girls and boys tennis team at Alhambra High School in Martinez, where I’ve been coaching for the past three years.
Teaching Style
First and foremost, I believe that tennis is a sport that should bring you joy and a fun new challenge.
In a lesson we will start with a short warm up to activate our muscles. We will hit some short court strokes together to get your timing warmed up. Then
I will analyze our strokes and work with you to set your tennis improvement goals. I’ve learned many new techniques and skills as the sport has advanced over the years. There’s always something new I can help you with whether it’s your topspin or slice forehand or backhand, your serves and volleys, overheads or drop shots there’s a buffet of new skills to learn. I can teach you to incorporate your whole body mechanics and you’ll not only hit the ball with better technique and pace you will avoid painful overuse injuries.

John really likes tennis and coaching girls and boys tennis at Alhambra High School. He instills confidence in his players so they can be the best that they can be without pressure. He enjoys playing tennis and watching the pro tournaments. Tennis is one of his passions.
John is a wonderful instructor. He is adaptive to the student's learning process and style. Usually we start out a lesson discussing what my goals are for the next hour. He listens to my needs and will add in suggestions to ensure I get the most out of each lesson. He also has a really nice balance of work to fun, making jokes along the way but ultimately providing quality instruction. I am always surprised by how quickly our hour lesson flies by. I'd recommend John to anyone of any age or skill level.
