About Me

Hi, my name is Gustavo and I go by coach Gus on the court. I am a level 2 PTR certified tennis professional with over 8 years of experience teaching in Canada and in the US (Toronto, Chicago and Florida)

When coaching tennis I combine two of my passions: sports and education and I love seeing positive transformation taking place in my students through persistence, self-confidence, discipline and sportsmanship.

As a player I am at 4.5 level, having learned the fundamentals at a young age. I competed in tournaments as a junior in Brazil, my homeland and in the US I was elected the most valuable player of the year in my Pennsylvania high school.

I love to play and hit with students already acquainted with the technique, however I do have experience and also enjoy teaching beginner students of different ages and levels.

I look forward to relating to my students in a respectful and positive way, using empathy and enthusiasm to inspire and motivate.
Knowing different languages (Portuguese, French and Spanish ) is a great asset in my communication skills which allows me to welcome students from different cultures and backgrounds.

I try to be objective when communicating during the lessons in order to make it more clear and effective, nevertheless questions and comments are always welcome making the learning environment interesting and friendly.

Studying tennis is an ongoing process for me. I enjoy learning from the history behind its legacy, and also staying up to date with the many aspects of the game such as physical, mental and emotional. Applying different teaching styles and methods from various renowned coaches and methodologies is important and enriches the lessons keeping it dynamic and pleasurable.

Most importantly is to find a balance between learning and having fun so there is a continuous effort and growing interest to keep practicing to get better.

Teaching Style

I am very outgoing and direct allowing the student to feel free and safe to learn and practice. My specialties are:
Serve and Volley
approach and volley
topspin and underspin
one-handed back hand
I use the play-practice-play method focusing in one stroke at a time around the fundamentals. You get to use in a game right away after you learned it.

It was wonderful experience with coach Gus. Both of my kids take classes from him.
He goes extra mile to teach the techniques. They have been taking classes for the past 3 years.

I am a mid level recreational player. I have been taking lessons with Gustavo for the last 3 winters. By doing so I have been able to improve my fitness, technic and understanding of the game. Our lessons usually last 90 minutes. The routine consists of a 15 min warm up, hitting the ball kindly close to the net and progressively back up to the base line. We then do a bunch of drills for 30min to 45 min. The nature of the drills depends of the kind of shots and technics Gustavo wants to work on (ground strokes, volley, over head shots, slices, drop shots……). The last 30 min are usually a “match” type where I practice shots learned in the drills and serves. To conclude the lessons Gustavo makes me do slow rallies in order to finish on a good note and cool off.
Overall I have been happy with my progress and feel more knowledgeable about the game of tennis which makes me appreciate even more watching the big events. It is without hesitation that I would recommend Gustavo as a tennis coach for anybody who wish to improve at any level.
