About Me
Hello, my name is August. I’m currently a graduate student at UW Madison, and I played NCAA D3 college tennis at SUNY Oneonta, where I played #1 and was a two-year captain. I’ve worked for many years at a tennis camp in NYC as a coach, and then as a supervisor. Most recently, I worked at the Cooperstown Country Club (in NY), giving private and group lessons to individuals of all ages. Throughout the past 6 years, I've given additional private lessons, and also regularly volunteer at adaptive tennis programs.
Teaching Style
My coaching philosophy stems from my work with Gilad Bloom (former world #63). Footwork and technique emphasized the most, as a fundamental foundation for any tennis player, from a beginner to a pro. The lesson structure will depend on the goals of the student but often involve actually hitting with balls with me. Feeding drills are also used if desired and/or necessary. Throughout the lesson I also have discussions with the student about why we are working on what we are, strategy and tactics, mental toughness, as well as how the student feels about what we are working on. Fun is also emphasized, especially with kids :)!

August worked with our teenage son to help develop technique and skills for competitive high school tennis. August was flexible with his schedule, and did a great job with communication. He's great to work with!
Lessons were well structured, and included stroke technique, body positioning, court positioning for various shots, and work on serves. August was very clear in his instructions, and had a variety of drills that focused on specific tasks. One of the many things we were impressed with is that he focused on one thing at a time, so our son could focus on that aspect of his play without being overwhelmed by a bunch of other instructions. Clearly, August is not only knowledgeable about tennis, but also knows how to teach tennis.
Our son really enjoyed working with August. He has a great sense of humor and is laid back while at the same time able to push the intensity when needed. This combination was great, as it kept things fun throughout the whole lesson.
I would highly recommend August, and will be hiring him again throughout the summer for private lessons. He's a great player, a great teacher, and a great person. I expect he would be a great teacher for any level of play, and from kids to adults.
First of all, he guarantees that you will be successful and have fun with his smiling face and simple explanation.
He is serious and detailed while teaching. He taught me that tennis is all about "moments", especially in matches, and that I should play the important points more confidently. He is a very good coach, I recommend him to everyone.
August is a terrific instructor. He is very patient and attentive, and knows when to correct and when to let play continue. He gives great pointers! Highly recommend.
August is very kind and patient. I appreciate how he focuses on the fundamentals like footwork, but also works with your preferred way of playing. I come from years of playing softball, and we use those skills and translate it to playing tennis. I’ve made amazing progress so far, not only on the physical aspects but also the mental as well!
