Our goal at MyTennisLessons has always been to make it as easy as possible for students to find a private tennis coach. Unfortunately, finding a private tennis coach in Richmond isn’t always as straightforward as we believe it should be. We took the time to research the local market and compare the offers available to our own. We did so by calling facilities, speaking with front desks, staff, and tennis directors, and documenting the booking process from a student perspective. Here are our findings.

To understand how Richmond’s private lesson market actually works, we contacted 11 local facilities and tennis providers. After trying and often failing to get in contact with providers, we found the below facilities in Richmond are the options when it comes to taking private tennis lessons.
TennisRVA is one of the more distinctive programs in the Richmond area. Rather than operating as a standard pay-per-hour private lesson service, it runs a structured training system that moves players from an initial evaluation lesson through hitting sessions and coached match play. It is open to the public and accepts new students based on coach availability.
Raintree Swim & Racquet Club is one of the more well-equipped facilities in the Richmond area, with 4 dedicated indoor courts, 2 courts under a permanent tent, and 8 outdoor courts. The club has a strong junior program with a track record of placing junior players in college programs.
Midlothian Tennis Club is open to both members and non-members and offers one of the more complete facility setups in the area with both indoor courts and outdoor clay courts. Members receive priority scheduling and lower rates.
Courtside West is an indoor racquet and fitness club that offers private lessons to the public on a trial basis before membership is required. Pricing and availability are managed directly by the head coach rather than the front desk.
Westwood Club is a private members-only club with both indoor and outdoor courts. Private lessons are not available to the general public without a membership.
Kanawha Recreation Association is a members-only club offering private tennis lessons to members across both indoor and outdoor courts. Pricing is not disclosed upfront and must be obtained by contacting the tennis office directly.
We also contacted four additional facilities in the Richmond area that did not return calls after multiple attempts or were not accepting new private lesson students at the time of our research.
Across the facilities we researched, a few issues came up frequently.
