There are many places where you could hop into a tennis clinic or group class, but private tennis lessons are different. In a major metro like St Louis there are a boat load of tennis pros but you have to know where to look. There are some elite club options that are going to cost a pretty penny but there are plenty of more affordable options as well. Keep in mind, expensive doesn’t always mean better so be sure to chat with your coach before your first lesson to ensure you’ve found the perfect fit. No matter what neighborhood you live in, there will be a coach near you who either coaches at a local tennis court or will be willing to travel to you. MTL offers packages and coupon codes that will help keep the tennis lesson prices down. You can browse the profiles of coaches so you know who you will be working with prior to any booking. At many of the clubs in the area of clubs you’ll just have to hope you like the coaches they employ. Seems like a bit of risk to pay a monthly or yearly fee when you don’t know you’ll like the coaches.

Located in the iconic Forest Park, Dwight Davis Tennis Center is a location any tennis enthusiast in the city is familiar with. While you may have played on one of the 18 lighted courts, you may not know that they do offer private tennis lessons through their connection with the USTA. On their resources page they specify various coaches with the USPTA you can contact depending on tennis lesson needs.

Considering the non-profit it is, there are no memberships required to take lessons at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center. Even though the tennis center is open late for night tennis lessons, don’t plan on lessons before work because they don’t open the gates until 9AM.

Vetta Racquet Sports is a good option if you want the flexibility of multiple options around the city. Vetta runs multiple indoor locations like Vetta Concord and Vetta Sunset and partner locations where you can book through Vetta like Webster Groves Tennis Center and Tower Grove Park Tennis Center. Since they have so many locations and partner locations it also means you will have a lot of choice when it comes to qualified coaches.     

Highland Golf and Tennis Club

While you don’t have to be a member to play at the Highlands tennis courts, you will have to be a member through The Highlands Golf & Tennis Club to take tennis lessons. A membership starts at $55/month, but there are also season passes and family plans available. 

They don’t have alot of information available regarding the prices of lessons once you do have a membership. But if you are paying for a monthly tennis pass you probably aren’t too worried about the price. If you do want to learn or practice on clay this is easily the best place to do it, probably in the entire state. 

The Saint Louis Tennis Collective

As a burgeoning tennis non-profit in the city, The Saint Louis Tennis Collective (formerly known as St Louis City Tennis) aims to get kids on the tennis court. While they do specialize in helping kids no matter their financial circumstances, you can sign up for private tennis lessons at the cost of $80/hr. They operate very much with ideals such as “respect”, “integrity”, and “kindness” at the forefront of everything they do on the court. They have qualified coaches, numerous locations (Dwight Davis Park, Ferdinand Park, Hudlin Park), and represent a great cause for the city.   

Frontenac Racquet Club

Out in western St Louis, The Frontenac Racquet Club has been a staple of the city for over 50 years. You will need a membership, but it gives you access to “30+ tennis and pickleball coaches” to help you up your game. If you want to keep lessons going during the summer it’s a great option. Have you, however, ever played on carpeted tennis courts? Yeah, me neither, but if you live in St Louis you have the opportunity to at the Frontenac Racquet Club. It may feel odd going back to hard courts afterwards but it is certainly one of the less pretentious and welcoming clubs to join for quality tennis lessons.

Missouri Athletic Club

The Missouri Athletic Club (The MAC) offers adult private and semi-private lessons for members only. There are various levels of membership that require a sponsor already a member that will run you a few thousands in initiation fees, and monthly dues. They employ a tennis coaching staff specifically for clinics, cardio tennis, and more importantly private lessons for both adults and high level juniors. They boast that they have specifically guided various players to tennis scholarships at “prestigious colleges and universities”. 

Besides working with elite juniors, they offer tennis lessons for any skill level for children aged 4-14. Even if you aren’t a member, your child can participate in private tennis lessons but you do have to jump through some hoops. First you must apply online, know a member who is willing to sponsor you, and hope there is room in the schedule.

Also if you are interested in joining the club, keep in mind that the only tennis courts, of which there are 8 indoor courts, are at the far west location, not the downtown one. So if proximity is a priority, and you live downtown, it may not be the best fit.
