About Me

Hello my name is Ian and I am a local Richmond tennis coach with over 25 years of playing experience and over 10 years of teaching experience!

I played Division III collegiate tennis at Roanoke College during my sophomore and junior years (2012-2013), coached annual summer camps for Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation (2007-2013), was an assistant tennis coach at Culpepper Racquet Club (2017-2018), was the Boys’ Assistant Tennis Coach for James Monroe High School (Fredericksburg, VA) for the 2018 tennis season (where we made it to the regional semi-finals and our #1 singles made it all the way into the state final), and have been a private instructor from 2019-Present.

Most recently, as a current member of Westwood Club playing on multiple USTA teams (4.0 & 4.5), our 18+ Spring team went undefeated at Regionals and was Runner-up at Sectionals (lost by one set!).

I am offering fun private tennis lessons, semi-private tennis lessons, group tennis lessons and hitting only sessions for all ages (kids, teens, adults, seniors) and for all skill levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). So whether you need to work on some specifics like your forehand, backhand, volley, serve, service return, overhead, drop shot, approach shot, footwork, singles strategy or doubles strategy - I would be more than happy to help you out with your tennis game!

I’m teaching tennis lessons in Richmond at Byrd Park Tennis Courts (Fan), Hermitage High School Tennis Courts (Glen Allen) (not during their season), Pocahontas Middle School, and Belmont Park Courts (Lakeside).

*Please note that if you are interested in semi-private tennis lessons (2 players) or group tennis lessons (3+ players), you will first need to find a friend(s) to take tennis lessons with you before contacting me.

Teaching Style

I tailor each lesson to each student's goals; whether they want to master the fundamentals, nit-pick a shot or match-related situation giving them trouble, improve mental toughness, or simply hit around - I allow the student to work on what they want to improve.

Ian is a great teacher and coach. He's patient, skilled, and he sees keenly the aspects of our son's game that he can improve. Ian is always good-natured and upbeat; he makes learning how to play tennis well fun. Our son looks forward to every one of his lessons and we -- along with he -- will miss them a great deal when they end. I recommend Ian to anyone hoping to help their kids grow.

Ian was great! Punctual, warm, and very helpful to our son. He was pleasant as well as focused on his strokes and footwork, and Ajax had a lot of fun. He also learned much. We appreciate Ian's help and look forward to the other lessons.

Ian is amazing!! I am currently taking lessons with him with two other friends. We've only had two lessons so far and we've already learned so many helpful tips and techniques. Even though he is working with three of us at once, he is great at pointing out different aspects each of us can improve on. He is also extremely patient and encouraging. We couldn't ask for a better coach to help us start our tennis journey and I'm so excited for the rest of our upcoming lessons!
