Hi, my name is Tom. I played tennis in high school, college, and have been playing USTA for the past 20+ years. I've been fortunate enough to go the USTA Nationals twice. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of tennis with others and have been teaching for the past 5 years to friends. I, also, captain my USTA team and run drills during practice. In addition, I have coached teams in baseball and soccer from youth to adult, as well as, being a professional trainer for technology in education while I worked at Apple.
We start with the basics then move to fundamentals then to strategies. My first goal is to understand where their skill level is when we begin. I am less concerned about ratings and more concerned about abilities. Then I like to understand what their goals are from the lessons. Do they want to develop their server, groundstrokes, net play, etc. I emphasize the totality of the game and how each aspect affects the other. Beginners need to develop the simple skills for success to build on. Intermediate players need to develop more consistency and understanding of the game's structure. Mid-Advance needs to understand more strategy and to develop a point structure. Advance players are looking develop an advantage based on their skills and weaknesses. I like to build upon success. Stress concepts such as footwork and racket preparation. And finally think about he psychology of the game similar to chess.
