About Me

Hello! My name is Paul Ferguson and I have been playing tennis for as long as I can remember and thoroughly enjoy playing, teaching and coaching the great sport of tennis. I have been coaching and/or teaching since 2001 when I started off at Otsego High School and helped turn that program from a one-win team my first season to making it to States Championships four years later - for the first time in their school's history. I also coached at Gull Lake for two seasons and helped the team qualify for States one of those seasons. I also was the Varsity Coach at Galesburg-Augusta for both the boys and girls teams, for six and four years respectively - ending in 2018/19. Between those positions, I was in Virginia Beach and taught as a certified USPTA professional. I worked there for four plus years before moving back here to Michigan. My main court location is Ramona Park, but Portage Central, Comstock High, and Portage West Middle are other possibilities,,, but can do other locations as per need/availability. Schoolcraft indoors for Winter.. but you need to cover the $17 or $22 court cost/per hour.

Teaching Style

I am completely open to teaching and coaching all styles of play and personalities. I personally am a very positive and patient person and have a good feel for what people need. This translates on the tennis courts to knowing when to push hard and when to hold back,, so as to not frustrate my players/students. I also do not hold back (much) when it comes to my critiques of your game and will give constant praise when we "get it". For my teaching, I emphasize eye-hand control - which includes warming up with volleys and short back and forth control. I can teach the serve and volley, baseline game (with creating angles), and everything in between. My own personal match play can vary from depending on what is needed to be done ... attacking the net, playing more offense or defense, adding more slices and spins, etc. Just FYI, I am right-handed and have both a one-handed and two-handed forehand as well - which is the lefty two-handed backhand - and a one-handed backhand in which I can use all three main spins. I will be trying to complement your current game play by adding more playing styles, (weapons into your arsenal), so that you will be able to adapt against just about any style of play you will come across. I have taught private lessons and group lessons of all ages and ran a kids camps in Galesburg during the summers when I coached there. I personally have no doubts that I can improve and make anyone better at tennis!! .. and if you give me a chance to help your tennis game then I know you will feel the same about me.

Student Feedback

Yesterday was my initial lesson with Paul (in a package of six), and we covered a tremendous amount of ground, including volleys and groundstrokes, forehand and backhand, slices and overspin shots. He gave me numerous pointers and corrections, and I have a lot to work on now before the next lesson. He even followed up that evening with an email detailing a dozen or so points he had made during the lesson, which I really appreciated. Just one example: "When your lead knee is straight, there is a major tendency for the ball to be pulled wide. Give as much knee bend as possible and finish everything else...." During the lesson, I started hitting the ball better (even using my small wooden racket), and I'm excited for the next lesson.

We have only had one lesson thus far, but Paul immediately picked up on the weaknesses and spent the lesson correcting and strengthening those areas. I look forward to seeing great advancements in play.

Paul is a fantastic teacher. He has been working with my ten year old son for 4 months. He has been able to identify my son's strengths and weaknesses and varies the hour long lesson's activities to both challenge and encourage him.
Paul displays a natural gift for helping students improve their game. I would highly recommend Paul to anyone. Message him today!
