Hi! My name is John and I recently relocated back to my home state of Minnesota, and am working to establish myself here in the Minneapolis/ St. Paul tennis scene! I am a pro tennis coach most recently employed at The Meadows Club in Boulder, Colorado, where I worked for three years -- initially as a summer-staff pro, then a full-time pro, and then for the last year, as the director of junior programming. By the time of my departure I averaged 18 private lesson hours per week, was leading 12 weekly adult clinics, and coordinating our junior summer program with more than 150 students ranging from 5-18 years old. During my time in Boulder I was also an assistant coach for University of Colorado Boulder, as well as an assistant coach for Boulder High School. Before Colorado, I taught tennis part-time and was the head coach for Superior Senior High's boys and girls teams in Superior, WI for two seasons.
I have been teaching tennis full-time for three years (seven years total) and have accumulated more than 6,000 on-court teaching hours as an instructor as well as designing programs, managing staff and organizing tournaments. I am passionate about instructing tennis and organizing programs, specifically in the area of how to better serve audiences who would not necessarily have access to quality tennis instruction.
I take the Walden approach with my tennis instruction -- "Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity." I have a lot of information, any good pro does, what separates the good ones from the great ones, is that they know when and how best to devulge this information. I call these appropriate times "teachable moments." And these moments are what I'm constantly on the look out for -- regardless of level, age or sex.
Our first lesson would be to identify goals and asperations, assess ability level and my reccomendations for moving forward based your goals and the number of lessons you would like to take. Then we'll follow a digramed progression of what each following lesson would look like to achieve said goal(s).

My 12 year-old son has had three lessons with John, and his skills, confidence and enjoyment of the game are increasing exponentially with each lesson. John seems to have that gift that great coaches have to convey information in a concrete way, to organize a lesson so that progress is measurable and leads to a feeling of success at the end of it, and to make the learning and improvement feel fun.
Our daughter's game improved even after the first lesson with John. He was able to quickly identify and observe areas that needed improving and was able to offer explanations and provide drills that were helpful. Our daughter really enjoys the lessons and John has been very helpful in coaching her to improve her strategy. He is a very encouraging instructor!
