About Me

Hello, my name is Jason! I am a married, Portland native and a full-time hospital chaplain. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's in Divinity.

I played 2nd seed singles tennis for West Linn Highschool (D1) , played for Portland State for one year, and have received five years of personalized lessons myself. Tennis has been a part of my life since childhood, and teaching it has always brought me joy.

I've been teaching tennis to many from absolute beginners to 3.5+ USTPA off-and-on (weather-depending!) for years. I have even helped my wife to be an absolute beginner to competing in the PTL :)

I hit primarily with a one-handed backhand but can also hit with and teach a two-handed.

Teaching Style

Lesson Structure:
Our first lesson will be focused on figuring out your current USTA level, play style, and learning goals going forward. I will let you know of your strengths and weaknesses on the court and give you a roadmap going forward.
Through instructions and drills I will find and give the most important things more time, according to your goals. It’ll be sure to be time well-spent!
Once we have a plan, I will be using video to analyze your game to give you specific goals. I’ll help you to improve on a variety of aspects including:
-Footwork and Stroke Form (slice, topspin, serve, volleys, overheads)
-“The Four Zones of Movement”
-High Percentage Tennis
-Serving with Consistency
- Adapting to uncomfortable shots
-Reading Your Opponent
-Pre and post-match Stretching Routines

Tennis has an extremely steep learning curve and can be frustrating at times between sailing the ball when it "felt just right", or when you just can't land that “one shot” when caught up in your own head.
My specialty is in analyzing your technical and behavioral habits and adapting my teaching to curate a specialized plan just for you. You'll find that my years in psychological fields come in handy when you're open to learning how to master your mental, physical, and technical tennis game!
